Everything you need to know about buying, selling, and transferring number plates on PlatesAU.
Head to the Sell page and fill out the listing form. Choose your combination, state, category, and sale method (Buy It Now or Auction). Pick a listing package — $20, $49, or $199 — pay the listing fee upfront, and submit. Your listing will be reviewed and go live within 24 hours.
No. PlatesAU is a marketplace for buying and selling the registration rights to number plate combinations. We do not manufacture or supply physical number plates. Once a sale is complete, the buyer and seller handle the official state transfer directly.
Contact us immediately through our support channels. We take ownership verification seriously. If the plates rightfully belong to you, we will investigate and remove the unauthorised listing. We recommend also contacting your state traffic authority to confirm ownership.
For listing fees and auction buyer's premiums, we accept online card payments. Once a sale is agreed between buyer and seller, payment is arranged directly between the two parties — bank transfer is preferred, but other methods can be agreed upon beforehand.
Listings are reviewed and typically go live within 24 hours of submission. You can manage, edit, and track all your listings from your dashboard.
No. There are no commissions on sales and no ongoing fees. You only pay a flat listing fee upfront — $20, $49, or $199 depending on your chosen package — and that's it. No hidden success fees, no monthly charges.
1) Browse or search for the plate you want. 2) Click Buy Now to purchase at the listed price, Message Seller to negotiate, or place a bid in a live auction. 3) Agree on terms with the seller. 4) Pay the seller directly (bank transfer is preferred). 5) Receive the seller's contact details and arrange the official state transfer. 6) Download, complete, and exchange the Transfer of Ownership form for payment.
Listing fees are non-refundable as they cover the cost of hosting and promoting your listing on the platform. If a sale falls through due to a dispute, contact us and we will assist in resolving the issue. Buyer's premiums on auctions are paid to secure the winning bid and are non-refundable once the auction is complete.
After the auction concludes and the final price exceeds the set reserve, the winning bidder pays PlatesAU the buyer's premium. The buyer and seller are then digitally introduced to arrange payment and delivery privately off-site.
Once the buyer's premium is paid, we'll send you the seller's contact details to arrange payment and delivery privately. Sellers prefer payment via bank transfer, but other methods can be arranged if discussed beforehand. If you'd like PlatesAU to assist with the after-sales process, just let us know.
Transferring your number plates to the new owner is relatively painless. Simply complete a Transfer of Ownership form and exchange it for payment with the buyer — the process is very similar to selling a vehicle. When possible, we suggest meeting the buyer in person at a local traffic authority office to make the exchange as smooth as possible. For complete peace of mind, call your state's traffic authority and they can confirm the seller is the current owner of the plates. Your plates always remain the property of the state they're registered in — you're transferring the 'Rights to Display' your combination. Steps: 1) Download a Transfer of Ownership form from your state authority, 2) Complete and sign the form (including your licence number), 3) Exchange payment for the completed form. Never hand over a completed Transfer of Ownership form without first receiving payment in full.
We ID-verify every seller before their listing goes live. Buyers don't need to verify ID with us — when a sale completes, the seller chooses whether to share contact details and the two parties handle payment and the state transfer directly.
Once the sale is agreed and contact details are released, you and the buyer arrange payment directly. Bank transfer is the most common method, but you can agree on other arrangements if you both prefer. Never transfer ownership or hand over the completed Transfer of Ownership form until you have received the full payment in your account.

Premium listings receive homepage rotation for the full duration of your listing period — typically 90 days. The exact display schedule depends on overall site traffic and how many other premium listings are active at the time.
Relisting is simply putting a plate back up for sale after its previous listing expired or was removed. You can relist from your dashboard with one click. If you originally paid for a listing package, you will need to pay the listing fee again to relist.
